I attended a seminar in Ballsbridge Court Hotel on Wednesday 23rd organised by PA assist and Osborne Recruitment. The seminar was titled “staying up in down times” and focused on motivational advice and personal marketing expertise to help jobseekers in a tough economic climate. This was a great evening with 3 key speakers – Kirishna De, James Sweetman and Brendan of Osborne Recruitment. Due to the nature of my work I am aware of many of the strategies but I still left with great tips and nuggets of information. Speaking to some of the other attendees they left the seminar burdened with positive energy and ideas.
The event commenced with a motivation and success presentation by James Sweetman. I have been aware of James but never met or heard him speak before. James outlined some excellent motivational strategies for jobseekers in difficult job market conditions. He encouraged individuals to cast off the shackles and move out of their comfort zones into uncharted waters. James touched on a number of key strategies I feel strongly about – Jack Canfields E+R=O and the importance of shutting out the bad news and negative people. James delivered the presentation with humour and laced with excellent motivational stories.
James was followed by Brendan Murphy of Osborne Recruitment. First thing that struck me about Brendan was his honesty. Brendan delivered an open and frank assessment to the job market followed by some of the key elements for marketing yourself during job applications and interviews. Even with the limited exposure to Brendan & Osborne I get the impression that working with his recruitment company would be a positive experience from an employer or a jobseeker perspective. Osborne Recruitment is a successful recruitment consultancy recruiting across a number of industry sectors.
Last but certainly not least Krishna De spoke about the use of online technology and social networking to market yourself, enhance networking and make yourself recession bullet proof. This was the session of personal interest for me and it did not disappoint – very informative and again well executed. I had a great interest in this section from a business development point of view BUT to enhance my knowledge to support my private career coaching and corporate outplacement clients. Krishna De is a leading personal branding consultant and social media marketing expert.
Overall I though the night was very worthwhile and plenty of new ideas but also reinforcement of existing ideas and strategies. As pointed out it is very easy to slip back into old habits and comfort zones.
Well done guys and gals!!

ESB Jobs – 3,700 New GREEN JOBS with ESB in Ireland
THE first 500 of 3,700 new jobs announced by the ESB will be offered to new recruits this year. The massive employment boost for thousands of workers was announced this week and is part of a €1bn a year investment in new green technologies. It should be pointed out that most of the jobs will not be in place until 2013. Still positive news all the same.
New recruits to ESB will work across a range of renewable technologies to reduce CO2 emissions. One such technology is the smart meter allowing householders to reduce their energy bills.
The 500 new jobs to be created this year will work on the rollout of free energy efficiency surveys for 25,000 households and the installation of insulation in homes. An additional 550 workers will work on a construction project revamping the old ESB headquarters in D2.
A part of the hiring drive ESB will also take on new engineers and provide training opportunities for 800 apprentices. This figure will include 400 FAS apprentices who lost their jobs during the recent economic slump.

IKEA JOBS in Ireland – Careers in IKEA
There have been over 4,500 applicants for 50 supervisor jobs in the first Ikea superstore to open in the Republic in July. Great company to work for OR only company with jobs?
IKEA will hold the final stages of its recruitment drive this weekend at the Ballymun Civic Center between 10am and 5pm. The company has 280 additional jobs to full and hope to meet suitable part-time and full-time staff this weekend. The 280 jobs will be on top of 120 management and general roles already filled.
A total of 500 direct staff will be employed at the store which is significant in these times. The breakdown is 10 senior management, 55 managers and 50 supervisors although nearly all workers will be titled co-workers within company culture and their “humble” management structure.
Almost all the new hires will be from Ireland as the company here and has emphasised hiring locally through its initiatives with the Ballymun Partnership.
There will be certainly big interest in the recruitment drive BUT also the opening in July. The Dublin outlet will be 31,500 sq ft representing one of Ikea’s flagship stores and it will include a restaurant and a creche.

Nationwide UK has created 20 new jobs in the IFSC with the opening of their Irish operation last month. The company is the world’s biggest building society with assets quoted of £200 billion sterling. Watch this space as the building society is said to potentially explore expanding into other areas of banking. This could signal more new jobs in the IFSC.
I wonder did Mr Cowen include this announcement in latest unemployment figures – I would be confident he did as the new was grim.
