Thermo King, NN Euroball, Filtertek, Brothers of Charity – Job Cuts

Terrible news on the jobs front yesterday as 270 staff lost their jobs a few weeks before Christmas. There were 3 counties affected with 110 jobs lost in Galway, 70 jobs lost in Kilkenny and 90 jobs lost in Limerick.

110 jobs lost at Thermo King in Galway

Galway suffered the biggest job losses on the day with 110 going at Thermo King Refrigeration. The company based in Mervue produced equipment for the European transport sector. The company employed 600 staff in Galway.

70 jobs lost at NN Euroball in Kilkenny.

NN Euroball announced it would close operations yesterday. The American company based in the IDA Industrial Estate at Purcellsinch produced high precision metal bearing components for the car industry.

90 jobs lost in Limerick with Filtertek & Brothers of Charity

Filtertek announced that it would be laying of 59 of its 99 staff at Newcastle West. Economic conditions were again cited as the key reason. In Limerick city the Brothers of Charity announced that shortfall in funding will result in 30 people losing their jobs.

Remember try to target hiring or department managers directly and avoid HR.

Jobs News – Cappoquin, Hewlett Packard (HP) and Caideil MP Teoranta

The papers have been focusing on global financial jobs loss over the last few days with thousands more jobs lost as a result of financial sector meltdown. Back home there was also more negative job news

Hewlett Packard announced that it wants to cut 24,000 jobs globally which has increased uncertainty with its 4,000 employees in Ireland. HP employs 4,000 staff in Belfast, Dublin, Galway and Leixlip. The global job cuts will represent a 7.5% of its 178,000 global workforce. It is expected that most of these job cuts will come from EDS a recent acquisition. EDS employs 400 staff in Dublin.

250 jobs will go in Waterford with the news that buy-out talks for poultry firm Cappoquin have collapsed. This is a huge blow for the poultry industry in Ireland with the direct job loss and indirect impact on 50 producers for the firm in Munster.

Finally Tourmakeady in Co. Mayo had some bad jobs news when local firm Caideil MP Teoranta announced that it would be closing with the loss of 32 jobs.

After 6 months of negativity, recession talk and job loss announcements this post is like gold at the end of the rainbow. Three companies Duolog Technologies, Solaris Mobile and Digiweb have all made positive announcement which will create many new jobs particularly the IT / Technology sectors.

Duolog Technologies develops software for the chip design industry. It current employs 80 staff at the UCD Innovation Center and has a design center at Galway. The company is hoping to increase its revenue to EUR15m by next year which will mean a potential increase in headcount.

Digiweb has announced aggressive plans to recruit 40 new staff to support the rollout of 4G mobile broadband. This jobs are part of an overall recruitment increase of 200 staff planned by the company.

Solaris Mobile will create 50 new highly skilled jobs in Dublin. The company will locate its HQ in Dublin and is part of a joint venture. Solaris will be recruiting these staff over the next 3 years. The will be recruiting graduates with a knowledge of space, mobile and communications sectors.

Let’s hope that this announcement will bring a bit of sunshine back to the jobs market in Ireland.
