Flextronics, Dell & Motorola – Negative Jobs News in Ireland

Friday, October 31st, 2008

There are fears for the future of about 100 jobs in Limerick as Flextronics investigates cost cutting. Flextronics employs 290 people in the Limerick. The company provides logistics and warehousing services for many companies in the region, including large multinationals like Dell Computers. There have been ongoing talks between unions and management with an announcement expected next week.

Obviously performance at Flextronics is directly impacted by performance at Dell. It is not surprising that Dell is to axe 400 temp workers. Newspapers reported that Dell is to axe at least 400 temporary workers this weekend. The computer manufacturer confirmed that 400 temp staff will be let go in Limerick. This news has increased fears for the 3000 permanent employees

Another blow for electronics was the news that Motorola is cutting 3,000 jobs globally.

Aer Arann job loss BUT jobs for Async Technologies, Avvio & Microsemi

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

New jobs on the way for the Mid West with 3 firms to create over 200 new jobs. Microsemi is a US firm producing equipment for space exploration. If reports are accurate they are planning an expansion which will create 185 new jobs over the next two years. This is great news for Ennis and the Munster region. What a turnaround too. Only last May the company was close to pulling out of Ireland. Also in Ennis Async Technologies has announced that it will be creating 11 new jobs. Down the road in Limerick Avvio is set to create 30 new jobs for the city. The 3 announcement bring a combined total of 224 jobs.

Sadly Aer Arann announced that it will axe 100 jobs as part of a survival plan. The aviation firm has suffered during recent economic turmoil. Workers were informed this week of the major restructuring and cost cutting programme.

Unemployment at 11 year high – Cook Ireland 200 new jobs

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Sorry folks but it is still general bad news on the jobs and careers front. Unemployment reached an 11 year high in September with figures nearly at the 250,000 mark. Judging by the general feedback it could be a winter of discontent. Property crash, stock market turmoil and credit crisis.

I was interested to read that Ballina, Tralee and Dundalk were three of the worst unemployment blackspots as I have been doing some work in all three locations over the summer. All seems to be sunny in Leixlip and Malahide though as unemployment is at 4%.

Let’s try and end this article with a positive note – Cook Ireland has announce that it will be creating 200 new jobs in Limerick over the newxt 5 years. This is part of a EUR25M investment. Lets hope for a few more of these announcements over the remainder of the week.
