Little birdie tells me that HP is to announce lots of new IT jobs in their Galway office. Mostly .net and Java jobs, for their business portals. It will be interesting to see if they will announce their jobs before Christmas, since I know of quite few people that would really welcome some new java jobs in Galway. HP being HP with their benefits package and all will most likely make quite a few both .net developers and Java developers excited. It is not really every day that that many jobs are opened these days. So well done Hewlett Packard!
Good news for HP Jobs in Galway really….

IKEA JOBS in Ireland – Careers in IKEA
There have been over 4,500 applicants for 50 supervisor jobs in the first Ikea superstore to open in the Republic in July. Great company to work for OR only company with jobs?
IKEA will hold the final stages of its recruitment drive this weekend at the Ballymun Civic Center between 10am and 5pm. The company has 280 additional jobs to full and hope to meet suitable part-time and full-time staff this weekend. The 280 jobs will be on top of 120 management and general roles already filled.
A total of 500 direct staff will be employed at the store which is significant in these times. The breakdown is 10 senior management, 55 managers and 50 supervisors although nearly all workers will be titled co-workers within company culture and their “humble” management structure.
Almost all the new hires will be from Ireland as the company here and has emphasised hiring locally through its initiatives with the Ballymun Partnership.
There will be certainly big interest in the recruitment drive BUT also the opening in July. The Dublin outlet will be 31,500 sq ft representing one of Ikea’s flagship stores and it will include a restaurant and a creche.

BIG FISH JOBS
One politician mentioned that there were signs of “green shoots” the other day. Possibly a bit early to be saying that BUT this is great news. New jobs for Cork!!
Cork City will get up to 100 new jobs with the announcement by US online games company, Big Fish Games. These jobs will be created over the next three years. (They always seem to be created over three years)
Big Fish Games is a US company based in Seattle and it employs about 350 staff developing and publishing what the industry call ‘casual’ games for mobile devices and computers. Casual because they don’t need skill. (it sounds like my niche).
IDA Ireland seems to be behind the scheme so good work again guys and gals. Big Fish Games plans to open its European Headquarters at Mahon in Cork City, and to employ up to 100 people there in the next three years.
By all reports recruitment for these jobs has started!!!
Customer support and games testing recruitment is understood to have already started. Website below.

I am regularly asked what would be a safe bet for Careers & Jobs during a recession. Personally I believe you should find what you want to do and you will be successful no matter what the economic conditions are. But if I was pushed for a job or career I would probably say hairdresser or undertaker. You see people die and hair grows no matter what the economic climate. To expand on other careers I have summarised finding from another site below. The below post outlines a number of other possible careers or jobs during a recession.
Healthcare – People will always get sick and will need care and support.
Energy & Utilities – Consumers may try to cut back but can never stop using energy or utilities.
Education – School stops for nothing.
International Focused Business – Globally when one country is facing into tough times another is on the upward cycle.
Police – If anything we need more of them in Ireland
Funerals & Undertakers – As outline above.
Accounting – When we hit hard time we look for ways to cut costs and accountants can help.
Public Sector – Normally more secure than the private sector although there are changes on the
horizon in Ireland.
Pharmaceuticals – Recessions do not impact the demand for drugs.
Military – perhaps wars and disorder are more of a possibility during tough times
Hairdressers – As stated above out hair will keep growing during a recession
Debt Collection – Perhaps not the most loved career but certainly in demand.
Trades – Plumbers – We will all need heating and water and if you are like me you will definitely need a professional when they pack in.
Interim Management or Consulting – Organisations are often attracted to short-term solutions during tough times.
Legal Profession – some specialist areas of law will thrive during a recession.
Food – We all need to eat even during tough economic conditions.
Health & Beauty – I would question this as I know this sector can be classified as luxury and would normally be one of the first things to go during a recession.
Luxury Items – We are talking about the mega rich here. Item related to their radar probably won’t take too much of a dent during a recession.

County Cavan bucked the jobs trend this week when Pauwels Trafo Ireland announced that it will be creating 70 new jobs in Cavan Town. The 70 jobs will be “high quality jobs” and will be created over the next 2 years. These jobs come as part of a EUR12m investment to expand the manufacturing facility. Pauwels Trafo Ireland manufactures wind transformers for western European markets. The company is owned by Crompton Greaves which is one of India’s largest private sector firms. I guess this is Karma paying Ireland back for all the recent job loss to low cost economies like India.
Dublin also received good news when Microsol announced that is will be investing in R&D at its operation in Dublin. There was no mention of a figure but these are the high end announcements we want. Microsol is based in D2 and they supply state of the art control technology. Interestingly they are also owned by Crompton Greaves.
Another announcement which was not so good was the news released from Xerox. They will slash 3,000 jobs globally which could have a direct impact on jobs in Ireland.
Careers and Jobs a site dedicated to jobseekers and employers in Ireland. Job News, career coaching advice and much more.

Sorry folks but it is still general bad news on the jobs and careers front. Unemployment reached an 11 year high in September with figures nearly at the 250,000 mark. Judging by the general feedback it could be a winter of discontent. Property crash, stock market turmoil and credit crisis.
I was interested to read that Ballina, Tralee and Dundalk were three of the worst unemployment blackspots as I have been doing some work in all three locations over the summer. All seems to be sunny in Leixlip and Malahide though as unemployment is at 4%.
Let’s try and end this article with a positive note – Cook Ireland has announce that it will be creating 200 new jobs in Limerick over the newxt 5 years. This is part of a EUR25M investment. Lets hope for a few more of these announcements over the remainder of the week.
