Jobs News – Cappoquin, Hewlett Packard (HP) and Caideil MP Teoranta

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

The papers have been focusing on global financial jobs loss over the last few days with thousands more jobs lost as a result of financial sector meltdown. Back home there was also more negative job news

Hewlett Packard announced that it wants to cut 24,000 jobs globally which has increased uncertainty with its 4,000 employees in Ireland. HP employs 4,000 staff in Belfast, Dublin, Galway and Leixlip. The global job cuts will represent a 7.5% of its 178,000 global workforce. It is expected that most of these job cuts will come from EDS a recent acquisition. EDS employs 400 staff in Dublin.

250 jobs will go in Waterford with the news that buy-out talks for poultry firm Cappoquin have collapsed. This is a huge blow for the poultry industry in Ireland with the direct job loss and indirect impact on 50 producers for the firm in Munster.

Finally Tourmakeady in Co. Mayo had some bad jobs news when local firm Caideil MP Teoranta announced that it would be closing with the loss of 32 jobs.

Careers & Jobs in Ireland – A look at the papers

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

The job section of newspapers is playing a declining role as a tool for jobseekers as much advertising goes online BUT it should not be ignored yet. I have had a quick look at the Irish Independent today and highlighted some of the interesting jobs.

The stand out role (or should that be stand up) this week is Chief Executive Officer for Smithwick’s Cat Laughs. This role will be based in Kilkenny and for more information visit www.smithwickscatlaughs.com

Education Jobs – there are quite a few teaching posts advertised with efforts by UK institutions to attract our teachers. Northfleet Technology College is seeking English, Maths and Science Teachers. For more information www.ntc.kent.sch.uk

Construction Jobs – not surprisingly most of the construction jobs are overseas. The big areas seem to be DUBAI, ABU DHABI and SAUDI ARABIA

ABIOMED – 250 New Medial Technology Jobs for Athlone, Co. Westmeath

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

As many as 250 new jobs will be created in Athlone following news that US Medical Technology company ABIOMED will set up operations in the town. ABIOMED is a high-tech manufacturer of cardiac technology and they specialise in “fixing broken hearts”.

This Irish facility will manufacture a new range of cardiac products for the US market. The jobs created will be high skilled jobs which is great news for the region.

Athlone and Westmeath has had mixed job news in recent times. There have been some new job creations but as much job loss. ABIOMED will actually locate its premises in a plant that was used by Conor Medsystems which closed at a cost of 170 jobs last year.

This is great news for Ireland during what can be described as quite depressing times as far as jobs and the economy are concerned. Ireland has secured a high class company amid stiff competition from other countries.

Jobs in Ireland – Is this your dream job?

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

I cam across this advert in an article I read and would be interested to hear how many of the readers would apply. I apologise to the women BUT you can apply too. This is an advert that appeared in the London Times in 1913

“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours in complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.”
Any takers?

I am sure some of you might argue that you are already doing this job. Well perhaps this is to locate your replacement.

Enjoy – funny comments accepted!!

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

There are fears of job loss at shannon-based firm Unbrako Europe SPS International following its sale to a US firm. Workers were informed of this news on Monday when they met the new owners. SPS has been based in Shannon since 1960 so is an established employer in the region. The company operates in the manufacturing sector making socket screws and fasteners for machinery and equipment.

Other news this week that will send shivers through munster is that Dell has closed a plant in Austin with the loss of 900 jobs. Dell is a huge employer in Limerick and Dublin. Dell is currently exercising global cost cutting and plans to reduce headcount by 10%. Hopefully Limerick and Dublin miss out on the job cuts.
