The paper also says that Oracle is planning to cut up to 1,000 jobs in Europe, according to a French labour union. A note on the website of the CDFT union says it has been informed by the company of plans to cut between 850 and 1,000 in Europe, from a total of 17,000 staff. Around 250 positions will be lost in France, the union claims, just over 15 percent of its French workforce. The apparent move by the software giant comes shortly after the company said it detected signs of improvement in its North American business for its fiscal fourth quarter, but indicated that the business environment in Europe remains challenging. An Oracle spokeswoman declined to comment.

Over 160 employees will lose jobs after 5 firms confirmed layoffs yesterday. The West of Ireland suffered the most with the news including Shannon, Limerick and Kerry.

CLARE – Agilisys Contact Services

Agilisys Contact Services announced it is to close its centre in Shannon transferring operations to the UK. The company has been based in Shannon for four years and had 71 employees. The company hopes that some of the affected employees will relocate to the UK.

LIMERICK – Irish Dresden

Dromcollogher (Co. Limerick) firm Irish Dresden has stopped manufacturing with the loss of 15 jobs. The company manufactured delicate porcelain mementos with pieces in the White House. Decline in global sales was cited as the reason for the closure.

KERRY – BeoCare & Beru Electronics

In Kerry – healthcare company BeoCare is expected to close and Beru Electronics is seeking redundancies. This is expected to result in 40 jobs lost.

DUBLIN – New Oceans Limited

Print and design company New Oceans Ltd has closed with the loss of 36 jobs. The collapse of the business and closure is linked to a significant fall in trade in recent months.

17,000 more workers joined the register in March, bringing the total figure to 371,000. These latest figures from the CStO show that 20,000 people signed on Live Register in March. This brings the seasonally adjusted total to 372,800 – a record high. More men than women joined the Live Register last month, with 13,600 males and 6,000 females signing on. Brian Cowen predicted that total number on the register could reach 450,000 by the end of the year. We seem to be getting there alot quicker than even he would have though.

There was also more negative jobs news for the munster region with jobs news from Flextronics. Employees at the company in Cork have voted to accept 130 voluntary redundancies as part of global restructuring plans. 150 employees will remain at the company. The company cut 118 jobs last November at its facility in Limerick.

Redundancy is a huge topic in Ireland today forced on us by changes in economic conditions. It is not a new term and has been part of the employment landscape for the last decade only hidden by the roar of the celtc tiger. Redundancy for many is a forced situation where they have no choice BUT what about the voluntary redundancy scenario – what do you do when you are offered VL? Do you take the lump sum and run? OR sit tight in these rough ecomonic conditions? There is no right answer to this situation as each case will be unique. There are positives and negatives and cases for both options. I have attached an article on voluntary redundancy I posted for the Irish Independent. (Please note that I have no credit for this but have requested that it be added) – Voluntary Redundancy

Ericsson Ireland announced that it will be cutting 300 jobs at its R&D facility in Clonskeagh in Dublin. These jobs will be phased out over the next 18 months. Ericsson employs 1700 staff in Ireland across a number of sites – Athlone, Dun Laoghaire and Clonskeagh.

The company had announced 5000 job cuts worldwide but most had hoped Ireland would escape. The company employs 80,000 across 175 countries so the cuts represent 5% of the workforce.

Ericsson Ireland has had business operations in Ireland since 1957 so it is well established here. This is a major blow as these are exactly the type of jobs we want to attract and keep in Ireland. Union official Peter Glynn said: “These are high value added jobs with a highly productive, highly skilled graduate workforce and that makes the news that the company intends outsourcing to either China or Hungary all the more worrying”.

United Drug is believed to be planning job cuts in Ireland according to the Evening Herald. The company employs 900 staff in Ireland.

The good news is that Ireland does not seem to be impacted. Intel is closing plants in Malaysia, Philipines, Oregan and California.

PERMANENT TSB

Over 100 staff at PTSB will be paid career breaks over the coming weeks as part of cost cutting exercise. It is believed that over 2,000 applied for the the offer of 20K for two year break and 35k for a 3 year break. Looks like a great company to work for when the staff are jumping at the chance to get out.

Dell have announced that they will cut about 1,900 jobs in Ireland as it plans to move its manufacturing function to Poland and a facility in Lodz. The jobs will be lost starting April with the transfer of manufacturing expected to be complete in 12 months time.

Dell announced a 3bn global cost cutting programme in 2008 and although it was expected that Ireland operations would have job casualties it was hoped otherwise. The positive new I guess is that 1,100 jobs were save in that these staff will continue to manage EMEA manufacturing, logistics and supply. Dell’s 1,500 employees in Cherrywood remain unaffected by the recent announcement.

The company statement read “We are proud of our 18-year tenure as a major manufacturer in Ireland. This is a difficult decision, but the right one for Dell to become even more competitive, and deliver greater value to customers in the region.”

Although the news is not a real surprise, as there have been job fears for months, it is still a terrible blow for the employees coming so close into the new year.
