17,000 more workers joined the register in March, bringing the total figure to 371,000. These latest figures from the CStO show that 20,000 people signed on Live Register in March. This brings the seasonally adjusted total to 372,800 – a record high. More men than women joined the Live Register last month, with 13,600 males and 6,000 females signing on. Brian Cowen predicted that total number on the register could reach 450,000 by the end of the year. We seem to be getting there alot quicker than even he would have though.

There was also more negative jobs news for the munster region with jobs news from Flextronics. Employees at the company in Cork have voted to accept 130 voluntary redundancies as part of global restructuring plans. 150 employees will remain at the company. The company cut 118 jobs last November at its facility in Limerick.

Redundancy is a huge topic in Ireland today forced on us by changes in economic conditions. It is not a new term and has been part of the employment landscape for the last decade only hidden by the roar of the celtc tiger. Redundancy for many is a forced situation where they have no choice BUT what about the voluntary redundancy scenario – what do you do when you are offered VL? Do you take the lump sum and run? OR sit tight in these rough ecomonic conditions? There is no right answer to this situation as each case will be unique. There are positives and negatives and cases for both options. New jobs on the way for the Mid West with 3 firms to create over 200 new jobs. Microsemi is a US firm producing equipment for space exploration. If reports are accurate they are planning an expansion which will create 185 new jobs over the next two years. This is great news for Ennis and the Munster region. What a turnaround too. Only last May the company was close to pulling out of Ireland. Also in Ennis Async Technologies has announced that it will be creating 11 new jobs. Down the road in Limerick Avvio is set to create 30 new jobs for the city. The 3 announcement bring a combined total of 224 jobs.

Sadly Aer Arann announced that it will axe 100 jobs as part of a survival plan. The aviation firm has suffered during recent economic turmoil. Workers were informed this week of the major restructuring and cost cutting programme.

Irish companies want the Government to cut public sector wage bill by up to 5pc. The current wage bill for the sector is EUR17bn. If this move materialised it would result in up to 10,000 job losses. IBEC reckons the move is essential to help the economy in Ireland and curb the EUR10bn budget deficit.

Online auction site eBay has announced that it will cut about 1,000 jobs globally which represents 10 percent of its global workforce. On a positive note a spokesman for the company indicated that the impact on Irish employees would be minimal and estimated that only about 10 people in total would be directly affected. Ebay is established in Ireland since 2003 and employs 1,600 staff in Ireland at offices in Blanchardstown. Staff were informed by email and then by management about the developments

Tyco Sensormatic

Cork received another jobs hammer blow last week with the announcement that US electronics firm Tyco Sensormatic will be transferring 320 jobs from Ireland. The announcement was broken at a meeting last Thursday.

The Bishopstown plant produces electronic anti-theft tags used in retail. The company has seen the employee headcount shrink since 2005 when it employed just short of 500 staff.

Swissco

Other job loss in the region came with the announcement that Swissco was planning to close its operations with the loss of 150 jobs.

Cork Job Loss & Unemployment

Cork has suffered with the downturn in the economy as much as most other regions in Ireland with the number of people on the Live Register increasing by more than 4,000 between March 2007 and March 2008, a jump of 28.8%.

We post a variety of career and job advice on this site. We post about new job creation in Ireland but we also post the negative jobs news. Negative job news has been dominating the media in Ireland as there have been quite a few redundancies over the last 12-18 months. I have worked with many employees affected by redundancy and you would be surprised at the mixed reactions. The fact remains that redundancy can affect an individuals confidence and self esteem. If you have been affected by redundancy you can seek support of your own back BUT quite often companies will put supports in place. This is normally called “outplacement”.

How does outplacement help employees?

Basically outplacement consultants help employees to navigate the difficult waters post redundancy. Organisations normally offer staff outplacement support to help them transition into new employment, education or training.

Typically outplacement will be in 1-1 or workshop format. The agenda will cover areas such as support to move on from redundancy, career direction, career assessments, cv design, job search strategies, interview coaching and preparation.

There are many providers of outplacement services in Ireland. Ideally your company will organise this BUT if your company is not providing support you can seek this support yourself.
