Terrible news on the jobs front yesterday as 270 staff lost their jobs a few weeks before Christmas. There were 3 counties affected with 110 jobs lost in Galway, 70 jobs lost in Kilkenny and 90 jobs lost in Limerick.
110 jobs lost at Thermo King in Galway
Galway suffered the biggest job losses on the day with 110 going at Thermo King Refrigeration. The company based in Mervue produced equipment for the European transport sector. The company employed 600 staff in Galway.
70 jobs lost at NN Euroball in Kilkenny.
NN Euroball announced it would close operations yesterday. The American company based in the IDA Industrial Estate at Purcellsinch produced high precision metal bearing components for the car industry.
90 jobs lost in Limerick with Filtertek & Brothers of Charity

Great news for the Connaught region with Thermo King announcing the creation of 19 new jobs. Thermo King designs and manufactures transport refrigeration equipment and currently employ 600 staff at its Galway city plant. Thermo King has been operating in Galway since 1976 so it is a well established employer in the region.
This new initiative will see Thermo King design and manufacture greener products for the EMEA markets. These environmentally friendly products will also be more cost efficient.
If you want to find information on these jobs why not view the website www.thermoking.com.
If I remember Celestica announced about 100 new jobs in Galway at the end of 2007 so this has been a positive period for Galway in the jobs front.

Employees at ICT Europe can sleep sound tonight as it has become clear that jobs are safe at the Belmullet plant for now.
We informed you yesterday that there were fears of job loss in Co. Mayo BUT these have been misplaced and jobs will not be transferrred to India or Philippines. Staff have been assured of their jobs with the only downsizing in the fact that 50 staff are reduced to a 4 day working week.
Great news BUT lets not hope this is the football equivalent of the board backing the manager and telling him his job is safe.

The rumour mill in Belmullet, Co. Mayo is in overdrive with reports that ICT Europe is about to downsize its operations. This would be a cruel blow to Belmullet as ICT Europe is the biggest employer.
ICT Europe set up about 5 years ago providing outsourced customer management solutions. It currently employs 140 staff.
It has been reported that senior staff from UK and US will be at the plant today to brief staff.
Let’s hope the rumours are not true and that the Belmullet jobs are not moving to lower cost economies like India- I will keep you posted.
