ESB Jobs – 3,700 New GREEN JOBS with ESB in Ireland

THE first 500 of 3,700 new jobs announced by the ESB will be offered to new recruits this year. The massive employment boost for thousands of workers was announced this week and is part of a €1bn a year investment in new green technologies. It should be pointed out that most of the jobs will not be in place until 2013. Still positive news all the same.

New recruits to ESB will work across a range of renewable technologies to reduce CO2 emissions. One such technology is the smart meter allowing householders to reduce their energy bills.

The 500 new jobs to be created this year will work on the rollout of free energy efficiency surveys for 25,000 households and the installation of insulation in homes. An additional 550 workers will work on a construction project revamping the old ESB headquarters in D2.

A part of the hiring drive ESB will also take on new engineers and provide training opportunities for 800 apprentices. This figure will include 400 FAS apprentices who lost their jobs during the recent economic slump.

IKEA JOBS in Ireland – Careers in IKEA

There have been over 4,500 applicants for 50 supervisor jobs in the first Ikea superstore to open in the Republic in July. Great company to work for OR only company with jobs?

IKEA will hold the final stages of its recruitment drive this weekend at the Ballymun Civic Center between 10am and 5pm. The company has 280 additional jobs to full and hope to meet suitable part-time and full-time staff this weekend. The 280 jobs will be on top of 120 management and general roles already filled.

A total of 500 direct staff will be employed at the store which is significant in these times. The breakdown is 10 senior management, 55 managers and 50 supervisors although nearly all workers will be titled co-workers within company culture and their “humble” management structure.

Almost all the new hires will be from Ireland as the company here and has emphasised hiring locally through its initiatives with the Ballymun Partnership.

There will be certainly big interest in the recruitment drive BUT also the opening in July. The Dublin outlet will be 31,500 sq ft representing one of Ikea’s flagship stores and it will include a restaurant and a creche.

Unemployment 11% and more jobs go in Cork – Flextronics

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

17,000 more workers joined the register in March, bringing the total figure to 371,000. These latest figures from the CStO show that 20,000 people signed on Live Register in March. This brings the seasonally adjusted total to 372,800 – a record high. More men than women joined the Live Register last month, with 13,600 males and 6,000 females signing on. Brian Cowen predicted that total number on the register could reach 450,000 by the end of the year. We seem to be getting there alot quicker than even he would have though.

There was also more negative jobs news for the munster region with jobs news from Flextronics. Employees at the company in Cork have voted to accept 130 voluntary redundancies as part of global restructuring plans. 150 employees will remain at the company. The company cut 118 jobs last November at its facility in Limerick.

Nationwide create 20 new jobs in IFSC

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Nationwide UK has created 20 new jobs in the IFSC with the opening of their Irish operation last month. The company is the world’s biggest building society with assets quoted of £200 billion sterling. Watch this space as the building society is said to potentially explore expanding into other areas of banking. This could signal more new jobs in the IFSC.

I wonder did Mr Cowen include this announcement in latest unemployment figures – I would be confident he did as the new was grim.

How to get a payrise (or How to avoid redundancy)

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I am inundated with requests for information about how to avoid redundancy. My response is the same. In most cases redundancy and decision-making cannot be controlled by the employee. I recommend the following tips for those seeking a pay rise and they can be useful for those seeking to avoid redundancy if only to refocus efforts away from the negativity of possible job loss.

Employees need to demonstrate quality and value to an organisation through actions and a passion for work and their job.

Try to volunteer for extra responsibility and go the extra mile and put in the extra hours if required.

Ensure that you react to special requests and urgent tasks from your superiors quickly and efficiently.

Try to dress for the job professionally and conduct yourself accordingly

Keep up your efforts for a continued period of time as this is what is noticed more that short bursts of energy.

Act on feedback from your boss particularly any development issues raised at your last performance review. This will make an impact.

Don’t be afraid to tell your boss about your desire and goals to do well within the company. Outline what you want to achieve with the company.

Voluntary Redundancy – Redundancy Ireland

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Redundancy is a huge topic in Ireland today forced on us by changes in economic conditions. It is not a new term and has been part of the employment landscape for the last decade only hidden by the roar of the celtc tiger. Redundancy for many is a forced situation where they have no choice BUT what about the voluntary redundancy scenario – what do you do when you are offered VL? Do you take the lump sum and run? OR sit tight in these rough ecomonic conditions? There is no right answer to this situation as each case will be unique. There are positives and negatives and cases for both options. I have attached an article on voluntary redundancy I posted for the Irish Independent. (Please note that I have no credit for this but have requested that it be added) – Voluntary Redundancy
