Today the newspapers announced that there are growing over the future of jobs at Kostal. This follows the news that the German manufacturer will cut working tme by 20% from February. The firm manufacters automotive electronic systems employs a total of 1,100 workers in Ireland. Downturn in global car sales has been sited as a reason for the cutbacks which will affect its two plants in Ireland – Mallow & Abbeyfeale. 29 workers are expected to be laid off this side of Christmas. There will also be shutdowns at these plants for three days in November and for three weeks over Christmas. From next February working hours at Mallow & Abbeyfeale will be reduced by 20 percent.

Citco has announced that it will cut jobs in Ireland. Employee at their IFSC offices were told that jobs will be lost from next month. Citco provides administration services primarily to non-Irish funds and the company has 1,000 employees in Ireland between Dublin and Cork. We announced earlier this year that they would be creating new jobs in Cork. What a difference 6 months makes.
Citco had planned to grow its Cork city operations and allow the location to take responsibility for a wide range of additional activities. This expansion plans were supported by IDA Ireland and were to create 150 jobs over the next 3 years. This expansion is now in doubt with the job cuts announcement.
Irish operations make up more than a quarter of Citco’s overall workforce. Generally the sector, Fund Administration, accounts for 9000 jobs in Ireland.

There are fears for the future of about 100 jobs in Limerick as Flextronics investigates cost cutting. Flextronics employs 290 people in the Limerick. The company provides logistics and warehousing services for many companies in the region, including large multinationals like Dell Computers. There have been ongoing talks between unions and management with an announcement expected next week.
Obviously performance at Flextronics is directly impacted by performance at Dell. It is not surprising that Dell is to axe 400 temp workers. Newspapers reported that Dell is to axe at least 400 temporary workers this weekend. The computer manufacturer confirmed that 400 temp staff will be let go in Limerick. This news has increased fears for the 3000 permanent employees
Another blow for electronics was the news that Motorola is cutting 3,000 jobs globally.

Irish companies want the Government to cut public sector wage bill by up to 5pc. The current wage bill for the sector is EUR17bn. If this move materialised it would result in up to 10,000 job losses. IBEC reckons the move is essential to help the economy in Ireland and curb the EUR10bn budget deficit.
Do you think such measures are needed?
Do you think IBEC is right to promote such drastic measures?
One could argue that all businesses are trying to cope with terrible market conditions and being forced to reduce spending and cut workforce so why should the public sector be any different. But will another 10,000 unemployed really be the answer. Certainly a difficult one.

The job section of newspapers is playing a declining role as a tool for jobseekers as much advertising goes online BUT it should not be ignored yet. I have had a quick look at the Irish Independent today and highlighted some of the interesting jobs.
The stand out role (or should that be stand up) this week is Chief Executive Officer for Smithwick’s Cat Laughs. This role will be based in Kilkenny and for more information visit www.smithwickscatlaughs.com
Education Jobs – there are quite a few teaching posts advertised with efforts by UK institutions to attract our teachers. Northfleet Technology College is seeking English, Maths and Science Teachers. For more information www.ntc.kent.sch.uk
Construction Jobs – not surprisingly most of the construction jobs are overseas. The big areas seem to be DUBAI, ABU DHABI and SAUDI ARABIA

As many as 250 new jobs will be created in Athlone following news that US Medical Technology company ABIOMED will set up operations in the town. ABIOMED is a high-tech manufacturer of cardiac technology and they specialise in “fixing broken hearts”.
This Irish facility will manufacture a new range of cardiac products for the US market. The jobs created will be high skilled jobs which is great news for the region.
Athlone and Westmeath has had mixed job news in recent times. There have been some new job creations but as much job loss. ABIOMED will actually locate its premises in a plant that was used by Conor Medsystems which closed at a cost of 170 jobs last year.
This is great news for Ireland during what can be described as quite depressing times as far as jobs and the economy are concerned. Ireland has secured a high class company amid stiff competition from other countries.
