IKEA JOBS in Ireland – Careers in IKEA
There have been over 4,500 applicants for 50 supervisor jobs in the first Ikea superstore to open in the Republic in July. Great company to work for OR only company with jobs?
IKEA will hold the final stages of its recruitment drive this weekend at the Ballymun Civic Center between 10am and 5pm. The company has 280 additional jobs to full and hope to meet suitable part-time and full-time staff this weekend. The 280 jobs will be on top of 120 management and general roles already filled.
A total of 500 direct staff will be employed at the store which is significant in these times. The breakdown is 10 senior management, 55 managers and 50 supervisors although nearly all workers will be titled co-workers within company culture and their “humble” management structure.
Almost all the new hires will be from Ireland as the company here and has emphasised hiring locally through its initiatives with the Ballymun Partnership.
There will be certainly big interest in the recruitment drive BUT also the opening in July. The Dublin outlet will be 31,500 sq ft representing one of Ikea’s flagship stores and it will include a restaurant and a creche.

Irish companies want the Government to cut public sector wage bill by up to 5pc. The current wage bill for the sector is EUR17bn. If this move materialised it would result in up to 10,000 job losses. IBEC reckons the move is essential to help the economy in Ireland and curb the EUR10bn budget deficit.
Do you think such measures are needed?
Do you think IBEC is right to promote such drastic measures?
One could argue that all businesses are trying to cope with terrible market conditions and being forced to reduce spending and cut workforce so why should the public sector be any different. But will another 10,000 unemployed really be the answer. Certainly a difficult one.

General Manager required for manufacturing facility in Shannon.
I posted earlier in the week about the news that Zimmer were opening a new manufacturing facility in Shannon. I noticed this morning in the Irish Times (p15) that they are recruiting for a General Manager (This is great news for all you impatient souls like me).
For those interested in joining Zimmer do not miss the small print at the bottom of the advert (I nearly did) as Zimmer are accepting CV’s for other leadership positions across the Business functions – Manufacturing Manager, Quality Manager, Engineering Manager, HR Manager and Finance Manager.Other professional jobs will be posted on website from Spring 2008.
Like most start-ups there is quite a bit of competition so ensure that your CV makes an impact and gets you called for interview. You will find some interesting CV information that could help on the following site CV4jobs.
For those of you who do not buy the Times the website is careers.zimmer.com.

Ireland is no longer the “land of the little people” and Darby O’Gill will have to pack his bags and move if he wants to do a sequel to his 1959 movie. The Celtic Tiger helped create a booming racing industry in Ireland but it is now putting pressure on the same industry as teenagers are now too big to become jockeys. Racing academies are now recruiting in regions like Eastern Europe to fill places. Paddy Power and other bookies won’t be laying odds on the new Irish Ruby Walsh in the near future. Having said this, the Guards could prove a solution to the Racing Industry staffing problems as I noted this week that we now have a guard who measures in at 5ft 2 inches.
